How to keep your central vacuum running in tip-top shape
One of the best things about a central vacuum is how little it asks of you. Here's the short list of what actually matters.
Filters: mostly, leave them alone
BEAM's permanent filter is self-cleaning, dirt shakes off before it reaches the motor, so there are no bags or filters to buy, ever. Your only job: empty the dirt receptacle roughly once a quarter. That's the whole filter-maintenance program.
Hoses: the part most people ruin first
- Hang it up. A hose piled on the closet floor gets stepped on and crushed. A simple rack keeps it kink-free.
- Detach the cleaning head before storing. Storing with heads attached cracks the hose coupling over time.
- Consider a hose sock. It protects the hose, and your walls, corners, and furniture legs.
Brushroll and belt
Hair and carpet fibers wind around the roller; snip them away carefully with scissors when you see buildup. Replace the brushroll when the powerhead stops picking up small debris like thread, and the belt when you feel no forward pull on carpet. Both are quick, inexpensive fixes at our parts counter.
Repair or replace a part?
The most commonly replaced components are hose switch assemblies, power nozzle necks, PC boards, hose handles, and attachments, parts under the most stress. Cosmetic cracks can sometimes be glued, but a stressed patch usually shifts the load to parts not designed for it. When in doubt, replace the component; every BEAM piece is available individually, so you never buy a kit for one part.
Safety note: power units and switch assemblies are not DIY repairs, and neither are 110/120V powered wall valves. Disconnect power before touching any electrical component, or better, let our technicians handle it , in-shop service has 24-hour turnaround.
The three habits that extend system life
- Empty the collection container every three months to prevent clogging.
- Store the hose and attachments somewhere cool and safe so they don't warp or crack.
- Use the system for what it's designed for, it's a vacuum, not a shop-vac for drywall dust or water.
